the character growth is so nice but also i wish even one single young man i know in real life who reminds me of jack would take it into his head to prove himself capable of the same

You know, reading this really just confirms my opinion that C. S. Lewis wasn’t arguing with any real pacifists in “Why I Am Not a Pacifist.” I was always like, “…No Mennonites that I know are THIS kind of pacifist” (I know a lot of Mennonites), and Bonhoeffer’s argument here, much closer in time to what Lewis might be replying to, also isn’t really addressed.

Reading John’s “should I ally with a demon” conversations with the different Rahels it’s just like wow, it really matters who you marry. Because it’s the same John.

The first Suicide Club story is so memorable. The others…I had read them before too, but I wasn’t sure at first I had, because I remembered absolutely nothing

I really like Monsieur Joubert. (It probably helps that he’s the only decent man in this entire, very French, book.)

enjoying this a lot but had to sit there for a second to blink at the page and ask myself if the young man had really just lamented, in an embittered and persecuted way, that his father had ONLY paid for him to go to Europe for three months (he really had).

i was thinking sure, there’s some melodrama, but this really isn’t terribly melodramatic as victorian novels go, and then mr franklin blake (whose middle name must BE “melodrama”) started narrating. (it’s great, i’m loving it all)

The author’s genius lies not in writing a character like Miss Clack (plenty of people have done that), but in making her the narrator. Ack. I am eating it up with a SPOON

“modern writing at its worst does not consist in picking out words for the sake of their meaning and inventing images in order to make the meaning clearer. It consists in gumming together long strips of words which have already been set in order by someone else, and making the results presentable by sheer humbug.” it’s so accurate

I disagree more with his take on Kipling than on Dickens, but still insightful—and smiled at the characterization of Kipling as “only half civilized”
