Ugh ik we’re not supposed to like June but I RLLY don’t like her LOL but also kuang always writes complex characters so I can’t fully hate June either like how can you do smth so morally incorrect and yet still hold good morals

Wow hey I’m still bored LOL idk everything feels so flat I’m still not attached to any of the characters nor do I rlly care where the plot goes even the death of one of the main characters made me gasp but it was so incredibly anticlimactic that none of the other characters’ grief feels that deep other like hello I’m an empath I should be feeling smth

Tbh I’m getting mad bored it’s all just gang politics and “I will die for our gang and family” bs like can smth freaking happen like yes we’ve been leading up to an obvi gang war but like ughhh im bored! And i wish the magic system was idk more whimsical? It’s lowkey TOO realistic to how magic would be treated irl lol and i love magical realism but the whimsy kind not this political stuff

Yay cool magic system!! I got adjusted to the world and its characters pretty quickly and I’m excited to see how the plot unfolds so far it’s reading almost like a tv show but that’s mostly cuz short chapters and an unsolicited sex scene LOL rlly wasn’t expecting that but yay off to a good start

Bro the minute I heard the mom was the main character I knew this mf was gonna die but damnnn I rlly like him I hope some fantasy magic brings him back to life or smth???

Getting past the introduction to a whole new world and cast of characters is always the hardest part of starting a fantasy book but now I’m investeddd already so attached to misaki and mamoru im excited to see where this story goes

I got to like the whole point of the picture of Dorian gray yk when he realizes what is happening to the portrait but then post the realization of his own decaying soul the language started getting sooo confusing and complex and I just can’t rlly focus rn so I might have to go back and reread this chapter

I will now convince myself that I suck at creating art because my existence is the art and that’s why I’m interesting

Holy shit I was wondering how the book was gonna pick up but that was absolutely not what I was expecting

God how I love found family and this is some of best found family I’ve ever read (easy to say considering Robin says “found my family” or smth very close to that) also I love how much I’m learning through this book despite it being an act of fiction due to all of the knowledge that goes into writing a story about language and colonialism like I’m getting history lessons and found family hello big win

Eek maybe it’s cuz I’m reading on my phone with too may distractions but this hasn’t fully hooked me yet the concept is super interesting and so are the characters/magic system so hopefully I’ll lock in and read it properly soon

Oh how I love rf kuang she has such a beautiful style of writing and I was already hooked by the freaking preface that she put which ended with smth along the lines of “this book is fiction don’t be pressed abt inaccuracies” and yet she’s been putting little sub notes every few pages that show the amount of research she put into this book I love her and I love the world building and characters already
