Switching my account to Fable as I divest from Amazon ( who owns goodreads). Find me there!

Devin is 50% done with Brimstone (Fae & Alchemy, #2)
I’m having a hard time getting through this one. a few writing quirks that are bugging me:
1. I encourage a well-placed curse word, but the way the word “fuck” is liberally sprinkled across the dialogue shows a lack of creativity.
2. Fisher is a chatty Kathy during the intimate scenes. When it comes to declarations of undying love, actions mean more than words, and less is more.

Devin is starting A Song to Drown Rivers
If I read too many romantasy series in a row, they get confused in my head. Switching genres.

This book needs some editing. There are many repeated conversations and events that are too similar. I’m struggling to get past this section. And Casteel isn’t a real person, he only exists to tell Poppy she’s great and has no other personality.

Devin is starting The Djinn in the Nightingale's Eye: Five Fairy Stories (Vintage International)
The writing drags on and on without coming to a clear point. This style of writing seems a bit antiquated. I prefer clear and concise. If you’re into literary analysis and trends in narrative development, this may be for you. I was bored.

Devin is starting The Housemaid (The Housemaid, #1)
For someone who supposedly grew up in prison, why does Millie seem to have zero street smarts? You’d think she would have greater insight into rich lady Nina’s manipulative behavior. Barely one hundred pages in, and this is falling flat.

As much as I adore the throne of glass series, the crescent city series is kind of cringe! I’m not connecting with the characters in the same way, perhaps because they read like a pale reflection of her other, better characters. The sex scenes seem lewder, perhaps because the character development and context is less lacking. I don’t particularly like Bryce and Hunt as a pair.

Devin is finished with The Clockmaker's Daughter
I’m almost done with this audiobook, but it is such a struggle! It is revealed how the ghost died (a major plot point of the book) and it is just such a stupid death. Unworthy of the lady. Ugh. It makes me sad and brings me no resolution. Must finish, but it is so emotionally draining getting pulled back into this story!

It’s a rare occurrence for me to dislike a book, but I am seriously considering abandoning this one. Self-centered, pretentious, pessimistic, insecure, and insufferable. I like writers with a more earnest and grounded world view. Maybe it gets better…. 😬✌️why in gods name does Lola want to get busy with someone as repulsive Amos?

This is my first Sue Monk Kidd, and I’m in love. Her language is so gorgeous that I don’t care much what the story is about! Even so, I am all in for the forbidden monk storyline. Can’t put this one down.

I need to stop reading this book before bed. I have trouble falling asleep if I do. Extremely well written, but so emotionally draining. I’m also kind of bummed to read another story about a woman as a martyred mother. Elsa is brave and wonderful, but why must we celebrate selflessness as a virtue? Why must heroic mothers sacrifice everything for their children? Don’t moms deserve happiness, too?

“Winter Woods” perfectly captures my love for the season. And “High Rise” introduces an entirely new perspective to urban birding. I keep thinking about the imagery of that essay. A beautiful book to read for a few minutes to break up your day.

Devin is on page 102 of 304 of A Christmas Carol / The Chimes / The Cricket on the Hearth
Reading “The Chimes” and I keep laughing at how histrionic and witty the language is. The last time I tried to read Dickens, I think I was in middle school and I thought it was quite dry. I’m having a completely different experience now. This dude really likes having fun with words. I might be a new fan???

I need to read this book with a pencil in hand, because there are so many great passages that I need to underline. I GET Glennon and what she is trying to say. She writes things about coming to terms with herself that I have thought, but haven't had the courage to own. During quarantine, this book is feeding my SOUL!
