Emilie's rural upbringing. The death of her mother; reaction of father and his austere, dignified character. Her chance to continue education; the reaction of her brothers and sisters. The marriage and death of her sister; the exclusion of the eldest. The impact of the war, known as "14", and the rebellion of her brother. Emilie's new life in Paris. Brief reflection on other lives in the country.

A good war story. The ending is very neat. The presentation of war in its futility and awfulness is well done. The characters are well drawn and convincing.
