This portrait of the treatment of women in India is fascinating and also very disturbing. The differences and complexities of women’s status due to caste, location, and traditions are a part of what seems to be the universal human condition, largely dependent on the accident of birth. Ms. Umrigar has written an important book that will be discussed at book groups everywhere. Highly recommend.
