Finchelstein published this book in 2024, and at the time his words were applicable. I wonder if, considering the 2025 reality of ICE and the admin, he’d say we have moved to full fascism now.

Akkad writes on page 57, “…one remarkable difference between the modern Western conservative and their liberal counterpart is that the former will gleefully sign their name on the side of the bomb while the latter will sheepishly initial it”.

And that sentence is so blatantly true that jt may stick with me forever.

*Spoilers* I’ve enjoyed the campy cheesiness of these books but only 5% into this one and I’m disappointed that a woman centered/empowering series would have two of its primary heroines react so weakly to romantic ultimatums from supporting male characters. Folding at ‘marry me or lose me’ and worrying about hurting male feelings isn’t a characteristic of a woman who values herself. Nor is it romantic. Ick.

What’s up with all the lengthy drawn out descriptions of Melania’s heart emoji texts to the author? The absolutely gushy way the author describes melania?

I am now fully expecting the end of this memoir to turn into a full on erotic political fan fic fantasy.
