Trying too hard to be The Bell Jar ...
Too many names and characters too little substance, i.e.,

"Helen and Emily met in the kitchen and had some coffee that Edith had left for Helen. Or maybe it was just left over. Helen asked Emily how her poems and paintings were going and Emily asked Helen about her son. Emily wondered if Helen really liked Edith, if she could really like." ........ and so it goes on

Putting down some thoughts now - the absolute butchering of the Scots dialect is killllling me, in what is otherwise a fun little story. The same character cannot use "ken" and "innit" .... the latter is English slang !! A 19th century scottish working class lad would never have that word in his mouth 😭
