John the Baptist had very likely spent time with the Essenes at Qumran. This explains so much!

This author is very scientistic and reductionist. He has no problem reducing human consciousness to biological processes and reactions and acting like it is a settled matter. I think to myself, “whoa, slow down! It may not be as simple as you make it out to be! Still, he has a fascinating understanding of the human race and its social and cognitive histories

Some of the info in this book isn’t new to me, but some of it is game changing

I started another book. I couldn’t help it.

The fact that Luther posted on the door of a church was a common practice. Men would use that door at Wittenberg for purposes of discussion & debate, would even post theses they did not personally believe in for the sake of intellectual exercise (although Luther was convinced in this case). It’s interesting to see our modern assumptions color understanding of history. I wouldn’t dare post on a church door today!

The first part of this book was slow going (his aimless, secular youth), but I think things are about to get good!

The perfect mix of Hawaii history folded into the story of a man who gave his life for the sake of others.

[audiobook] It is amusing to hear the narrator’s varied attempts at pronouncing Kaluapapa, Kealakekua, etc!

Loving this book and finding Father Damien to be a fascinating man and character.
