The fact that Luther posted on the door of a church was a common practice. Men would use that door at Wittenberg for purposes of discussion & debate, would even post theses they did not personally believe in for the sake of intellectual exercise (although Luther was convinced in this case). It’s interesting to see our modern assumptions color understanding of history. I wouldn’t dare post on a church door today!
