I’m absolutely loving this so far. If you struggled to get into The Nightingale like I did, you may not struggle with this one. It’s totally different.

I haven’t finished this yet but I’m loving it so far. It’s like a fluffy/low angst version of Gravity by Tal Bauer (which I know some people say is fluffy haha but there are so many emotions!) the two MCs are even the same age and have the same background as the MCs in Gravity - one older experienced Quebecois and one younger rookie American with a super telepathic connection and supportive team. It’s great!

25th amendment, Section 3

It’s time, Jack.

I’m just…. I’m confused. I’m struggling to understand how **spoilers**

Someone tells you they are literally being held hostage and tortured by their father and your reaction is to straight up DO NOTHING. You do absolutely positively nothing about it. Police report? Nope. CPS, considering this has been going on since age 10? Nope. Team doctor? Nope. NOTHING. Ughhhhhhhhh

This is such a sweet story. It’s definitely not written in modern language which can be kind of shocking (they call people of Asian descent “yellow” with alarming causality, for example). It’s essentially a beautifully rosy take on the occupation of Hawaii, one in which everyone has a stake in the islands’ future and where the islands are basically just big ranches.

People are obsessed with this book - it’s been recommended like crazy across reading groups, and not just queer ones - and I can’t understand why. It’s a relatively straightforward story about a very boring man’s very boring life (with the exception of some ridiculous side stories).

This is the third time I’ve checked out this book and it’s about to be returned to the library again. I just can’t get into it. I think I’ve figured out the problem. It is painfully slow-burn - plot, romance, intrigue, everything. But also, I think this author is very good at writing Nikolai and very bad at writing his POV. It’s like she can capture him in the eyes of others but can’t get in his head.

This book has everything I should like in a book… intricate fantasy, all kinds of LGBT rep (we even have a BI MERMAID like omg) but I had a lot of trouble staying engaged. I thought it was just because I’m really busy with school right now but I’ve read several other reviews saying that same thing. The loan time ran out but I may try again.

Incredibly well crafted high fantasy with an intriguing story and characters. It’s not long but it’s taking me a while because I just started PA school.

This book, in one quote:

“I love him,” I said fiercely. “And he loves me.” Matthew’s many secrets—the Knights of Lazarus, Juliette, even Marcus—I pushed to the side, along with my knowledge of his ferocious temper and his need to control everything and everyone around him.

LETS JUST PUSH THIS ALL TO THE SIDE, CANT BE IMPORTANT RIGHT?!?! 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️

I’m really struggling to get behind the main premise of this book, which is that a young woman with no educational background or drive to learn would be expected to attend classes for four years at Yale.

I gave up on this book five pages in. The writing was atrocious. So many people rave about it but I just don’t think it’s for me. This was going to be my foray into het romance but I just don’t know if I can do it.

Julian turning off his emotions is very vampire diaries of Cassandra Clare. I can’t wait until Emma tries to hug him or something. Let the misunderstandings commence 🙄 I really feel like this series is going in circles. I’m pretty much reading to get through it at this point.

It took this long for Nikolai to show up and also this long for me to start liking this book. Coincidence? I think not.

Also, how is Mal all of a sudden a well-adjusted grown up who has out of nowhere come to terms with Alina's powers and future? Like he did a COMPLETE 180, he is suddenly a much more mature person, and I'm waiting for an explanation??

I have to say Alina saying “I did it!” after the first time she successfully fought someone off is a MOOD, and maybe the most believable line in a fantasy novel ever 😂😂😂 I can’t stop laughing.

I chose not to continue reading this book because the characters are detestable. It’s one of those books you might hate read... the main character is a mother to a son who literally has no idea what sexual harassment is (good job, mom) and a husband who cares less than not at all about his family. It could easily take place in DC (maybe it does)? The relationships are toxic. No thanks.

I couldn’t get through this book, which is VERY rare for me, especially with comparatively lighthearted fiction. The letter-writing narrative style was awkward and seemed like an excuse to avoid descriptive passages or narrative detail. I did love learning about Guernsey’s occupation during the war, but I wish it had been done better.
