When we read someone’s interior monologue, it should sound like an interior monologue, right? “Perhaps the conservatoire will have precise information on Gabriel‘s whereabouts while on tour!“ Is this how an eighteen-year-old woman speaks to herself, in her own head, while facing the pressure of wartime occupation, religious persecution, poverty, and hunger?

I am revising my previous statement to say that the male love interest in this book is actually an appallingly bad choice of partner. A person in his or her mid 30s who can’t stand up to an overbearing stage parent and mistreats others as a result? Ridiculously unsympathetic character. There has been no amount of character development that would make me think otherwise, and I’m 3/4 through.
