I am revising my previous statement to say that the male love interest in this book is actually an appallingly bad choice of partner. A person in his or her mid 30s who can’t stand up to an overbearing stage parent and mistreats others as a result? Ridiculously unsympathetic character. There has been no amount of character development that would make me think otherwise, and I’m 3/4 through.

I’m halfway through this book, and I feel like Ransom is is either an empty husk or a sleazeball. It’s not clear at all what the grown-up attraction is. I feel like I should want these characters to get together, but the way he’s written, I just want to tell Liv to run. OK, you two were one another’s safe harbor as teenagers, but what do you like about each other NOW? It seems so superficial.
