This novel caught me entirely by surprise. It grows on you like leaves in a vine and tangles you in until you can't escape, you have to finish it because the story grips and tightens on you without mercy.

Anyone else disappointed this was not in fact a fictional historical setting but contemporary urban fiction? 🙋🏼‍♀️

I was not prepared. This book is magic. I swear I've been on edge since the first page, and just now, wow! Not only is this written beautifully with every gorgeous detail significant to the plot, but also with a slow-burn romance and an intrigue with more plot twists than a maze. And I'm here for it!

It's been a long time since I've had the pleasure of finding a new stand alone historical fantasy novel that is so gripping I can't seem to put it down. I am forcing myself to pace because I'm torn between wanting to devour it to find out what happens next and enjoying the beautiful writing at leisure.

I was never inclined to pick up anything by Maas before despite her popularity. Mostly because I assumed they were YA and I was not very interested in the genre. I finally picked it up at my local library and begun reading. It hooked me right away. It's well written, characters are engaging, and it's steamy and violent enough to intrigue me. I'm enjoying it so much I bought the collection edition to keep for myself.

Oh, my god! I'm not sure what bothers me more: the head hopping and disregard for POV, or how boring the love interest is. There is zero attraction between them, the focus on the superficial stuff is annoying. There is no depth of feeling. I'm about to DNR because I'm halfway through and I'm sorely disappointed.

Sigh, I had high hopes for this book. But the pacing is way off, with way too fast a pace in certain scenes and then dragging on others. The FMC is vapid and completely inconsequential to the story this far as nothing but a pretty thing to be complemented by the MC. There is very little credibility in the romance between the two, with no depth, nor any attempt to include her into the adventure. I'm trudging through.

I found the story so far intriguing. The pace is a bit hurried, rushing through the last pages of the chapter, not to mention the meet-cute between the FMC and the two potential love interests. This chapter could have been made into two to expand on the characters a bit more and slow it down.
The formating was a bit off putting, with random spaces between paragraphs, and there are lines that make very little sense

This author needs to be more careful of the etymology of the words they use in a fantasy world entirely made up. When they use words related to Earth, and not the fantasy world, it pulls you right out of the story.
Also, I'm still salty about the ridiculous use of "male" and "female" as nouns.

The fact this author finds it acceptable to address characters as simply "males" or "females", tells me they don't comprehend these are adjectives needing a noun, and they can't be used on their own because it's just grammatically wrong, not to mention culturally inappropriate. It takes me right out of the story.
