"The women on Sutton's campus outnumbered the men almost two-to-one". Yet there are no female decision makers in SGA or MJUMBE. But plenty of women to make coffee, bring sandwiches, and type up the minutes.

"there comes a time when men must be men and women must be women. We feel that if we cannot receive the respect that we believe men and women deserve..." This letter is fascinating because the men of MJUMBE think they are also speaking for the women of the campus, but it seems they haven't asked the women what their complaints are or included the women in their high-level discussions.

The relegation of black women to secretaries and sexual play things in the "black power movement" is an important point that I'm glad Heron makes repeatedly. The black men of the civil rights movement even pushed Rosa Parks to the back of the bus and did not allow her to speak.

Part 1 moved slowly, but now I understand why. Though it moved slowly, I really enjoyed the writing and relationship perspectives especially the dancing monkeys and cool girl rants. Part 2 my jaw dropped to the floor and I can't stop reading. This book is so good.

"I have made a vow to myself never to accept a guy's Invitation to Crazy, and from the moment you showed up at my dressing room door, that's what I've felt like you've been trying to hand me." Loving this book!

Loving this book! The main character Davie Jones is sad, but so likable. I'm rooting for her.

A small child typically laughs more than four hundred times each day, an an adult-seventeen times. I wondered if I hit even that number most days.

The days are long, but the years are short. It sounds like something from a fortune cookie, but it's true.

A common theme in religion and philosophy, as well as in catastrophe memoirs, is the admonition to live fully and thankfully in the present. So often, it's only after some calamity strikes that we appreciate what we had.

Sometimes "later" becomes "never." Stop procrastinating or saving "special items" for a later date.

I am also an African-American authoress and I met Donna at the NABJ Convention. She was warm, friendly, and extremely helpful. I just finished reading "I Don't Know How She Does It" which is also about a woman finding her place in the world, struggling with guilt, and never putting herself first. I just finished the first chapter. The writing is lovely and the story is compelling. So excited to have found this book.

Gretchen writes that when dealing with children "acknowledge [their] feelings" just by repeating what they say. Don't argue with them. "Experts say that denying back feelings intensifies them." I just experienced this. I was helping out in my godson's 2nd grade class. One boy was crying because someone popped his water ballon. I just repeated what he said was wrong and he stopped crying and felt better. WOW!
