I love books that are analytical but accessible, providing important language as she says, that help us understand ourselves and make sense of the world and our place in it. Sexuality is a major part of being human, whether you are ace or not, but asexuality demands a closer look at it, and lets us explore its different components more thoughtfully.

I don’t think I had ever heard before that it’s more important for people to accept the scientific consensus on all things relevant to life, health, and politics than trying to directly persuade people out of their religious beliefs. E.g., believe what you want about the afterlife, but please accept the life-changing nature of vaccines. However, the author does point that after this, people will reject religion.

I have been waiting for this book my entire life. It sees and understands me. It embraces me. What a gift that this book exists. 🩷❤️‍🩹

A very reasonable and empathetic proposal. It shows a third way: not pretending there isn’t conflict between religion and science, not assuming religion can’t change, only be destroyed; but acknowledge that all religions accepting the scientific consensus while maintaining their religious practices is possible and good for all. Defining secularism as 4 values (equality, liberty, truth in govt, evidism) was new!

I’m highlighting almost entire pages because she just gets it. 🩷

Describing her mom as a "strong woman that worked hard to break through that glass ceiling and step out of traditional gender roles that "God intended""? Half the book describes to us how her dad was controlling due to religious belief and the mom stood mostly by, as he said he was "head of household". It is explained that they stopped going to church, but no deconstruction process is explained...

Well, impressions are impressions but maybe mine came too fast. What is interesting about this memoir is that, although as I previously said it helps me explore and makes sense of things and name things, it's also vastly different to my experiences or anyone that I was surrounded with. I think the element of public school in the North American christian context presents vastly different experiences, interesting!

I love memoirs. I particularly love memoirs about growing up religious because they help me make sense of my own experience while also validating the thoughts, feelings, and struggles my friends and I had. It helps me explore that. The author is magnificent at putting into words the anxiety, the dread, and the panic lived in growing up religious. Naming things is the first step towards healing.

Estupendo. Ojalá haberlo descubierto antes. Me consta su influencia en autores como Allende. Juego con el presente y el pasado, difumina la línea entre los vivos y los muerdos. Fascinante de leer, aunque a veces confuso pues no estoy segura quién en algunos momentos está narrando.

The author is witty and resourceful. I can't believe a novel made of poems could characterize so well.
