Fully aware that this says more about me than the text itself, but god men have always seen themselves as lecturers and women as their dutiful audience huh?

Act one has been incredibly tedious so far, and this was very obviously written originally as a web novel. However the world building is quite fun, and every time Priest dangles that romance carrot on a string in front of me I simply must read on

Re-reading this, and I'm struck by just how sad it is. The first time I read it was at 17, then 19, then 21, and now at Anne's age of 27 I feel everything so much more.

I used to laugh at the absurdity of Anne being considered an old maid, but now I can't help but feel all the pain with her. There's this incredible depth to her sadness that Austen only hints at, and yet it radiates through every page.

Absolutely gobsmacked by this book. Fast paced, dark, impossible to put down so far
