Re-reading this, and I'm struck by just how sad it is. The first time I read it was at 17, then 19, then 21, and now at Anne's age of 27 I feel everything so much more.

I used to laugh at the absurdity of Anne being considered an old maid, but now I can't help but feel all the pain with her. There's this incredible depth to her sadness that Austen only hints at, and yet it radiates through every page.
