My goodness this book is terrible. It’s supposed to be set in the 1990s yet the main character talks like a private eye from the 40s. Women are dames and obscure (I think) references make up most of the conversations. I’m afraid to see what other reviews say so I’ll wait until the end.

Read two books of the set so far. Vampires in Chicago. Not particularly my genre but I’m now invested in the series and characters.

I agree this book would be helpful. If I was an overthinker. Which I am not. But I would recommend. If you are.

I have a problem when I have to think hard to make sense of the writing. It goes too slow and I get frustrated. I know the author is trying to recreate a Nigerian speech pattern, but I may not be able to take it.
For example: “A firefly is the eyesballs of a angel. That one be bringing a message of moneys to us. I didn’t sure what message that firefly was wanting to bring, but I knowed it no money.”

This whole book
Is written
With the long pauses
And choppy sentences
And makes me feel
Like a Black poet
Gwendolyn Brooks
Or Nikki Giovanni
Is preaching at me.
I may not finish.

60 pages in. I hate all the characters.

6 chapters in. The whining, absolutely whining angst of the teenaged MALE character is driving me batty. If he keeps it up I may have to end this.

So far, a charming read that brings to mind a less intense variation of The 100 Year Old Man who Jumped out the Window and Disappeared.

3.5 but I will round up because it all wrapped up well in the end.

This was a good second book in the series, but not as well written as the first. Someone needs to count how many times “absolutely” is used. My estimate is upwards of 400. I will read the next though, it’s still enjoyable.

Halfway through, and although it’s entertaining, it’s not as good as the one on the corner.
