The story of the twice tolling clock really made me think. I think most of us do the opposite of the creator’s recommendation, in that we pay a lot of attention to the time, but very little attention to life itself.

Lila has just been introduced. In the meantime, Paloma is starting an affair with a guy named Franco. Paloma has told Franco about her father’s safe house, despite promising to keep it to herself. I wonder what the consequences of that will turn out to be. Valentina is going out with Santiago’s friend Maximo. Now Alfonso Larrea is in the hospital and his survival is uncertain.

In the ‘90s Paloma has sought out the man who was the last person to see Valentina before her disappearance. She finds his daughter instead and learns that he unfortunately passed away two months prior to her visit. In the ‘70s, signs of the dictatorship are taking hold in Argentina. A man who is the uncle of Santiago’s and Victoria’s mutual friend has had his hands beaten for playing objectionable music.

Santiago is obviously very serious about Valentina, but obviously something has to happen because he later marries Lila. Paloma now knows that Valentina had something to do with her father building the safe house. Paloma has traveled to Buenos Aires under the guise of spending time with her boyfriend’s family, but in actuality, it was to meet with and speak to Martin Torres, aka Professor Torres.

So far this book switches back and forth between the years 1998 and 1973. The main character, Paloma, is the daughter of an Argentinian diplomat, Santiago. Paloma learns that her father played an important role in a past conflict in Argentina In the past chapters , Santiago is at University. In the present day, at this point, Paloma and her family are visiting Santiago’s
father’s ranch.

I should have guessed that the Talker was Minnette’s father. Simone’s recital sounds like it was really something.

Theo sometimes goes to walk on the riverbed when he can’t sleep. I like to read when I can’t sleep. It’s not traveling physically, but it’s traveling in my mind. The bestowals are on hiatus. Theo and Ellen’s bike ride and Ellen’s feather display sounded lovely. It reminded me of the times I used to pick up feathers off the ground as a kid and made me want to see if I could spot more of them now.

Cleave Torbsr seems like an a**hole and very controlling. “…move forward he would”. That’s what Theo determined about his bestowals after the unfortunate encounter. I don’t think the phone talker guy did a terrible thing by sitting down on the bench that Theo was using for his bestowals, but to be carrying on a heated phone conversation so close to a stranger is just rude.

Theo has become a regular guest in Lamisha’s
home. I’ve gathered that Theo doesn’t drive. He’s always walking or taking the bus. I don’t know if that is the result of age, or what happened to his daughter. I find it odd that Theo had apparently lived in the US for decades, spoke English fluently, and had somehow never learned the phrases “bump into” or “run into” until he moved to Golden.

Ellen seems like a bit of a stalker. I hope she gets to meet her son, though.

Theo’s meeting with Minnette was very moving. I found out that Theo is 86 years old. The text had already made it clear that he was elderly, but I would have placed him in his 60s, maybe 70s. As an artist myself, I find reading about Asher in his studio very motivating.

So far this book makes me wanna take a stroll down a busy street and stop into a crowded coffee shop.

Joon-lee has told her mother that she and Yo-Chan, Mi-Ja’s son, are engaged. I realized that Young-sook is practicing guilt by association. Yo-Chan has done nothing wrong, yet because Mi-ja is his mother…

It’s the 1970s now and Young-sook is now a grandmother. She’s working cooking food for American soldiers. She and Do-saeng argue about how she spoils her grandsons.
