Levi Sweeney is finished with Surprised by Joy: The Shape of My Early Life
The book's beginning to pick up now. Lewis is never without wit or wisdom for long!

Levi Sweeney is finished with Surprised by Joy: The Shape of My Early Life
Ordinarily a big fan of Lewis, but not finding much of interest in this tome, fairly thick for him. I may be the sort of guy who finds what he has to say about religion and philosophy more interesting than the details of his childhood and upbringing. I'll stick with it, just to see what's what.

Levi Sweeney is on page 190 of 446 of Dereliction of Duty: Lyndon Johnson, Robert McNamara, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the Lies That Led to Vietnam
Book is beginning to turn into a bit of a slog. Endless reports of cabinet meetings, paper-shuffling, differences of opinion, various bits of deathly-dull double-dealing. I get that it's important to understand the subtleties of what's going on, but man, *Yaaaawwwwwn*

Rereading this for the first time in more than ten years, I reckon. A lot better than I remember, especially with the movie of the recent, not-entirely-necessary movie trilogy. Much less serious than the movie, and moves a lot quicker than the said movie would lead you to believe. Not an LoTR prequel, but a solid novel which more than stands on its own. Can't wait to continue!

Levi Sweeney is on page 135 of 256 of Empire State of Mind: How Jay-Z Went From Street Corner to Corner Office
Some interesting things so far, but the main lesson -never do more than one thing- is summed up pretty quickly from the introduction. The story of Jay-Z's career may make for some exotic dinner-party anecdotes, but other than that, I don't see a whole lot in this book to justify its existence.

Levi Sweeney is starting Richard Nixon: The Life
Listening to this on audiobook. The sheer size of some books can make them daunting to approach, but I now see that the typical lengthy format of the modern biography (often owed to a desire to be "definitive") is a virtue in the world of audiobooks. With a good narrator, you can break up hours of once monotonous tasks with one of these babies. Looking forward to morning walks now. Also, Nixon is such a sad fellow.

I've been hacking away at this thing since August and it still feels like I've been reading it forever. My only motivation for trying to finish this voluminous, propagandistic slog is to find out if the execrable author has any more pearls of political wisdom to dispense in an ocean of self-glorifying horse manure.

So far, so good. McMaster's writing is clear and concise, serious without being pretentious or overbearing. He is merely seeking to relay the stark facts.
