Can you believe that a book ostensibly about international falcon thievery has time to divulge in a short history of Liverpool? At least now I know that the term “Scouse” is actually referring to Liverpudlians, and isn’t like a separate British population I guess.

I’m just saying this now - I already know this is going to be the best book I read of 2025, and possibly the last decade. I mean, Victor Hugo has a way with words I cannot even describe. I was hooked from page one and it hasn’t let up steam yet.

I don’t know what is about 19th century English romances, but why are the male love interests so unpleasant and rude? It makes me feel stupid for not understanding the general appeal.

on my third try reading this, I FINALLY am in a mindset to understand the flow of this story. and not only do I understand it, I am fully belly laughing. No one ever said this was funny! The poor fool Patch screaming as he’s being given away to the king as a gift from the cardinal - tragically hilarious

Can I just say, while I’m engrossed in the story and what is happening, I really don’t understand why or how the main character is ending up in so many of these situations? Reminds me of the review on Jane Austen novels: “just a bunch of people going to each other’s houses”

This is a case study for the common refrain: “land doesn’t vote.” Every county in the US has an elected sheriff, despite the wildly disparate population numbers between counties, leading to disproportionate representation of rural Republican sheriffs, whose political views only appear to represent the “majority” views. Yes apparently sheriffs can openly express political views.

Already this book is so f’n amazing, I am hanging onto every word!! EVERY SENTENCE IS SPUN FROM AN INTRICATE WEB OF INTRIGUE. so precise so hitting

surely if any of these people wanted to find out if any random science theories were true, they could pick up a Popular Science magazine instead of just looking at tabloid magazines and wishing the internet still existed

okay I barely understand what’s going on so far with all the occultist stuff but this guy is such a horrible father ? The guy we are apparently supposed to empathize with as the main character abuses and gaslights his 5 year old son. Wtf is happening
