Faulkner's command of language is striking, and at times the labor and creativity he puts into his writing is so apparent as to make you wonder if that's not more the point of his writing than any given plot point.

"It was hot; heat quivered up from the asphalt, giving to the familiar buildings about the square a nimbus quality, a quality of living and palpitant chiaroscuro."

About as slow as Dostoevsky, though.

"I realized I didnt like what language was making of me. Didn't like what I was becoming, Mister. I'd become a kind of gobbler, a consumer of the world's bad news, and I was sick of the feed."

So so creative. I'm loving the protagonist's staggered, messy growth and how the fantastic nature of his world is changing with age.

The quality is really a mix so far for me. The third-odd story about a trip to the grocery store is followed by a really beautiful depiction of someone intellectualizing themselves into a life of loneliness. I've enjoyed the book overall, but I can't help to think that it would have been nice to cut a few of the repetitive stories in favor of further developing the unique ones.

This is another audiobook I'm putting on while cleaning, cooking, etc. The style of the writing is actually lending itself to being an audiobook very well so far.

My last summer of college, when I most strongly felt the weight of the unbridled world of possibility, I had thought I'd move to study in Dublin and join the human rights scene there. At the time, I thought my reasoning was altruistic. Reading this is making me realize I'm really just a hibernophile. It makes it hard to say if the book's objectively any good, since I'm living vicariously as I read ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.
