Good god, this is like an insane primer on the petty distinctions and snobbery of the English class system. The absolute disdain for the servants. One college student has "not particularly refined antecedents"

at the start of part 2 chapter 3 there's a very racist page with the n word. gross as hell. shame because otherwise so far it's very good but. ugh

So much of this is genuinely laugh out loud funny that I've been speeding along for the first time in reading for ages

i took a 1.5 year break but im gonna finish this thing!! its good ive just been bad at reading

very accessible and easy to read introduction to the world of bible scholarship and the various interpretations of the most important hebrew bible stories. good stuff

a really fascinating book - v readable and human stories well told and linked into a wider narrative of the pathological understanding of human behaviour

reading this slowly cause i find it depressing. like in the sense of oh all this stuff happens and knowing that at the end things didn't really change that much and it's juts agghh.

dunno if i'll ever finish this tbh. i like her talking about her experiences of motherhood but the other stuff kind of soured me

pretty much all these stories are really good i recommend this book

it's hard to know if i'm reading this "right". parts are good, parts are sort of ridiculous overwrought and too over the top to really work creating an atmosphere. i've enjoyed it but not consistently i guess. and now it's got to a part where i'm seeing the word "b**ch* over and over and over i'm just like blurgh it's not pleasant

I'm terrible at poetry so I don't really understand the writing as well as I should but there's a lot of good fascinating surreal imagery that stays with me

writing is all good but the stories are all pretty bleak, a couple really depressing, mostly about it being shit to be a woman so heavy going and I'm v slow

this book is like 50% lesbian under/overtones rn

you'll probably like this a lot if like me you really liked david byrne+talking heads but probably not so much otherwise
