(I'm tempted to say that I'm devouring this book but I've "only" read half of it in roughly 2 days. I was already incredibly invested but around the halfway point we catch glimpses of the mystery at the core of the plot and maybe I'm overexcited but I'm so hyped and might finish it tonight or tomorrow...)

Honestly I havent touched this book in weeks, probably months. Very likely I will DNF it. It aint that bad but it's... Bland? Considering how bad former entries were I don't think I'll keep going with the series but whoooo knowsssss

If he's describing someone laughing, bursting out into laughter, trying to hide a laugh or laughter or errupting into laughter one more time I'll go crazy it just happened 5 times in 2 pages

Actually pretty decent but still quite a few bad parts sprinkled across that the quality gap in the prose is astonishing. Still think a professional editor couldve improved and shortened this long ass book

Hanif's writing is as soulful as ever and speaks straight to your heart if you're open to it.

Ngl it's a looooooong ass book, but "oh btw those characters you know since the 5th chapter of the first book, they're blue. BLUE! crazy, right??" is fucking hilarious almost 1000 pages into this book.
Also written from one of the main character POVs. "Yup, never noticed they're blue whoopsie i've been busy"

Still plenty of awkward writing that rubs me the wrong way. Pacing kind of weird. None of the supposed humour is getting me. Plenty of characters that are either supposed to be funny clever witty wise smart etc. but come off as none of it. The characters feel kind of performative. The constant swearing with fuck and shit irritates me, if you swear so much come up with your own swears idk

Soooo much better than the first book but there are still a couple stupid things. "Oh hey I havent eaten for a month and have been horribly tortured o well I'm doing fine and am completely normal immediately after and didn't eat shit"

And the Ella reveal also incredibly fucking stupid right after the exposition dump reading from a book thing lmfao

As previously mentioned, I truly did not want to dislike the first installment of the series. But I did and considered - and still consider - it a fairly bad book. The "prequel" novella The Fall was much better and convinced me to keep going. Luckily Of Darkness and Light is MUCH better than the first one so far. Still kind of a mixed bag with some rough parts and good ones on par with the fall.

Dialogue still painful to read. Powerscaling that would make some shōnen manga jealous. His hair is still wet from the womb why is he a spellslinger and a great swordsman after spending a week with those guys. Yet, the fight scenes are still kind of bad and bland.

Almost feels like a parody because it's so derivative. Eragon got his brisingr so this guy got.... ICE? Sword dance is so fatf coded. Idk man painful

bipolar people have less mood swings in a week than the characters in this book have over the course of a single paragraph

This seems like a passion project and I'm proud of the author selfpublishing the book but man it's rough.
Dialogue is horrible. Characters have as much dimension as a sheet of paper. Almost halfway done and it gets harder with every page. Almost dropped it immediately.

If you consider the first Eragon book derivative, this book will make it seem like the pinnacle of originality.

Hate to dislike this one but ughhh.
