As I texted my friend: Pretty Russian writing makes me happy good sci fi I like it very much so far

So far, very classic YA vaguely fantasy dark academia story, though a little less skillfully done than the average YA book. The love story is so clear from the beginning.. of course the main character is going to get with the insanely hot guy she hates. I’m not a fan of tropey romance in the first place tho

There was not even an attempt at veiling the impotent male power fantasy in the conclusion. Genuinely dumbfounded how a short story could end so poorly. It wasn’t even offensive, it was just boring. There’s all this intrigue about this evil oppressive state and then the main character is like, actually I’m escaping on my “phallic” (direct quote) spaceship. Could’ve been reading James Joyce.

I am finding Odysseus to be a wholly unattractive character. But the intrigue is fun.

Now I am lucky enough to have the image of Proteus, the old man of the sea, taking his afternoon nap in a pile of seal pups.

My father wrote in the margins of Telemachus’ speech to the suitors “no morality just fear of retribution” and I think that pretty much sums it up.

“When the sensual world unconditionally surrenders to the intermittency of mutability, man will be freed in perpetuity from the tyranny of the single present” (114).

It’s fun to read fantasy/sci fi after taking a break for so long. The narration can be slightly cringe sometimes but the plot is super engulfing. Glad I picked this up, a friend gave me his copy of the book years ago and I’ve been meaning to read it ever since.
