Man this book is so messed up and I have no one to tell about it

for a book ostensibly about a group of Ancient Greek students they sure use a lot of Latin. Consummatum est!

The way that Byatt mixes prose, poetry, academic writing, epistolary exchanges, and different voices for each POV character is so fascinating, and it is even more astonishing that each type of writing is executed phenomenally

I am only three hours into the audiobook and I’m mostly enjoying it but Mrs Le Guin’s tendency to use Muslims are some sort of gotcha argument about totalitarianism and bigotry is highkey getting on my nerves. Oh no the Muslims don’t like abortions… well neither does the so called enlightened West Ursula hope this helps <3

picking this book back up after 5 months of actively ignoring its presence on my nightstand lmao

the story would be so much better if we didn’t have to deal with wax and wayne like they’re just so bothersome!! not in a “I cannot stand them” way more like “they make everything around 50% less fun whenever they’re there” way

suddenly i think i now understand why people are so engrossed in the toxic drama of that magnolia parks series like watching two people fight and make up and be simultaneously good and bad to each other is so entertaining... except instead of being about British millionaires it's about two randos from omaha, nebraska

whoever pitched this book as knives out x rom com doesn’t know what comedy is and has never watched knives out either

barely two chapters in and i must have said "shut the fuck up" and "omg get over yourself!!!" out loud at least half a dozen times 🫠

hate when im reading a book and the characters act like complete idiots for no other reason than stirring a bit of drama to the plot like this could’ve been avoided if someone rubbed two brain cells together…

each and every chapter makes me say WTF and holy shit a little bit louder the more I go on… the horror is horroring

not me going into this book thinking “well how horrific can a medieval story about angels and demons can be?” Turns out VERY HORRIFIC is the answer. shaking and quaking while listening to the same audiobook before knocking out rn

i think what's really pissing me off about this book is how the author is trying to imply that tarquin is wrong in everything he does and naira is just this tragic heroine who no one understands and meanwhile I'm like. naira should be shot actually. ajkdfklsdfkg i feel like I'm reading words and they're trying to tell me something but I'm getting another thing altogether. what a frustrating read.

i feel like the author put her all into making 90% of the characters annoying as fuck

naira is lowkey annoying in this one ngl… ok there are attenuating circumstances but good god girl get a grip!

"kamran had been in a hateful mood all day" kamran has been in a hateful mood the whole entire length of this book besides the moments where he stares moon-eyed at alizeh. somebody prescribe him anger management classes please
