it’s a bit slow rn but not slow enough for it not to be interesting. still waiting on how moths are involved in the murders… smthng about climate change? the characters are v realistic & dynamic which i <3, its mostly abt vera trying to find the relationships between all these people to get the killer… it might be some crime guy called jason but that’s too obvious i hope it’s one of the retired old ppl !!

omg also i read a part where another detective, holly (theres vera, the lead, then holly and joe assisting her) — who said before she doesnt want to turn into vera, married to the job or wtv — was talking w a victim’s mother and they were drinking tea and holly was thinking the teacups are so small and dainty, then “vera couldn’t fit her fat fingers in to hold the handle” WHAT?? SO RANDOM?? WHY???? LIKE?

anyway other than THAT this is really interesting. there are lots of characters and the perspective switches a lot and chapters are short just how i like them. the slow build as they find evidence; things getting more complicated the more they learn so it feels like the more you know the less you really know. still don’t know the murderer or the motive. but both victims had an affinity for moths & catching them :o

ok i dont have my book w me rn but i read something so absurd today. i’m over halfway thru now & i’m still annoyed abt how the weight of the lead detective, vera, is discussed. its ridiculous. vera was quickly pacing bc she was excited since theyd just found where one of the murders happened, and then: “if she hadnt been so heavy, joe would have said she was dancing.” HUH? AS IF FAT PEOPLE CANT DANCE???

also the lead detective is overweight and they like will not stop mentioning her fatness. idk what the purpose of that is bc if there is no purpose or resolution surrounding it then i’m like why keep bringing it up. it’s not always negative, but it IS always negative when a character is talking/thinking abt her. “she should lose weight” and stuff. and ig thats real life but idk it’s treated like a side plot

first moth mention was page 67, then on 68 we get the reveal that one of the two men who was murdered in this little valley in europe w nothing but some far-apart houses and a pub was starting a nature photography career and he has a moth catcher in his backyard. hes also mentally ill and has been to the hospital for it a few times. the detectives are on the case… very mysterious deaths… i’m liking this so far

so i read this book years ago and got like 30 pages from finishing it and just fell out of it somehow, but i really enjoyed it. it’s like a snow white retelling but a lot more nuanced and interesting and the evil queen is actually not just purely evil like she has her own motivations and stuff and it’s really interesting. so i’m excited to reread and finish it this time !!

“the strange tale of the tunnel” is also in the anime, but in the original story i’ve just read there are definitely parts that were taken out for the anime adaptation, and i think those parts make it even better. 4.5/5 because it is amazing but it doesn’t have that spark that makes me obsessed like slug girl or the thing that washed ashore

“washed ashore” (also called “the thing that washed ashore,” a title i like better) is literally about a massive sea creature that has washed ashore. it is short, simple, haunting, and terrifying. i love the ocean so much because of how horrifying it is, so this story is another one that is special to me… i’ve seen commentaries on fear of the deep sea include this as reference. genuine perfection. 5/5 <3

that was perfect. i read “slug girl”, the story i was most excited for. it was just perfect. something about the vibe just settles right into my brain like this story was made for me to read and enjoy, which is very weird to say about a 16 page story about a girl turning into a slug. i think it’s body horror… when it’s done right i become obsessed. and junji ito can do it RIGHT. 5/5 no doubt about it at all

just finished “clubhouse”. eeek!! something about that one i really love… somehow it reminds me a bit of the movie jennifer’s body, which i also adore. anyway i enjoyed this story and it kind of ended in the middle of the climax and i love that. junji ito is amazing bc not only is the content of the story weird but even the formatting is kinda strange. hes perfect! this story was amazing tbh 5/5 !!! <3

just finished reading “the licking woman”. WEIRD. WEIRDDDD WEIRD WEIRD. but there was body horror and a female protagonist, two things that i love very much. and there was a hot side character with glasses and she was so cute junji ito doesn’t usually have characters with glasses. anyways that was bizarre and again the mystery was not solved and people died. LOVE! 4.5/5

ok i just finished “venus in the blind spot,” the story after which the title was named. i liked that one. i like the title a lot and i like that you figure out what it means as you read the story yknow? it’s also a little bit tomie-core. definitely strange. i liked it a lot tho cant explain why. 4/5? maybe 4.5 even?

i’ve read so much lately it feels amazing. also this book is so fucking good. at this point in the anime i felt a bit confused about why certain people disliked each other and some relationships were just so convoluted it was hard to remember what the grievances were but the book explains everything so well. everything comes together and people’s feelings make more sense and are more flushed out. it’s perfect!

“an unearthly love” is the title of the story i just read, based on the original story by edogawa ranpo (a pen name he chose based on edgar allen poe). it was interesting and of course junji ito’s art always adds so much to a story. i enjoyed this one i think. yet another story shrouded in mystery which is very junji ito (although he didn’t write it originally). 4/5 i think. all my ratings are base on vibes

so i finished the first story (like most of junji ito’s books, this is a compilation of stories), titled “billions alone”. junji ito is so wild for ending it like that. very mysterious. tons of unanswered questions… but it’s very clearly meant to be that way. id rate it 3/5 i think, maybe 3.5. on to the next one!

bad things are happening. this book is kinda just as tragic as the last book but this one makes me sadder… characters’ parents are dying… theres a war starting and this teen’s parents just died and we know (bc this is one of the classic very long flashback sequences) years later becomes kind of an insane person bc of this and hes like a sorta enemy in the present and it’s so sad:( BUT SUCH GOOD LORE!!!

EGEHEHE SOMETHING CUTE AND GAY HAPPENED!! they survived an encounter alone with a big scary beast and they had to take care of each other… omg i love slowburns when the slow part is taken up by battling ghosts and ghouls and beasts and the living dead and evil cultivators and fun characters and intertwined relationships and stuff. ugh these books are perfect. this one might be my favourite so far tbh
