Dammit. I wanted to try but I think I’m too young and too American. Just far too many references to dated cultural things that I cannot relate to. Alas, another lit fic book abandoned. I’m glad to have finished some DFW in my life. Gass is a bit out of reach I guess.

So I’m over halfway. I’ve avoided reviews. I thought maybe this was heading in a “crazy woman fakes medical disaster to rope in husband” plot, but I just pivoted. While I cannot come up with a motive for Jeremy to bring Lowen to his home, my current stance is he wrote the autobiography and planted it knowing she’d read it. Which is why his story corroborates. Which is why it paints him as a great person.

Holy crap. I loaded this up on my Kindle to see "29 hours remaining"...I've whittled it down to 23, but I'm not sure I have this kind of time right now....

In my new habit of not reading through summaries or reviews, I find myself often blindsided by some books. I'm not sure where I read this was a psychological thriller, but I'm getting the feeling it is more overtly horror...and it's not that I don't enjoy supernatural stories, but when you're expecting a regular croissant and you get a chocolate one, it can be a bit of an adjustment.

Oh man, this is a rough read right now. I got into bed last night and told my husband, "I feel this is building up to something awful, and I don't want to see it happen." Of course, what portion of the novel was I on last night? Ugh. I'm both envious of the group's friendship, and horrified for Jude.

I'm not sure where I got this, but it seems maybe free from Amazon? I hadn't downloaded any new books and was already in bed, so I started this one. I have so...many...issues. I may publicize my Kindle notes for this one simply because I cannot summarize my frustration adequately enough. It's a short one though, so I'll finish it just to happily delete it from my device. Ick.

Apparently this landed in my account free from Amazon. This makes me nervous, but I’ve read some doorstops lately and need short, quick fluff. So here we go.

I’m giving in and trying this out. I really don’t think Hollis is my girl. Maybe she’ll prove me wrong. 🤷🏻‍♀️

It’s the type of book I always say I’ll stop reading (didn’t I just do this with Warcross)? I also wish publishers would stop putting real faces on novels. Let’s do this...

So I’m over the obvious style stealing and find myself interested in the story and April’s experience. This is turning out to be a fun read. I am quite nerdy about apocalyptic survival though.

Basically Dorst’s “S” rebranded as a video game companion. I couldn’t ignore the high ratings on Amazon or GR, despite my concern with it basically being a marketing item. However, I’m starting to think most of the readers, being from a different demo, are experiencing the marginalia/ephemera concept for the first time with this book. Still plan to finish...and damn, the book is fun to look at.

Man, the concept of this book is really cool but given that it was released a decade ago, none of the supplemental websites exist anymore. Google searches result in people discussing the book from a “post-discovery” standpoint. Guess this’ll have to stand on its own then.

Having some conflicting thoughts about the author’s grammar choices. There are some passages that completely break the flow because of some odd sentence structure or unexpected turn of phrase. I end up having to think too hard about what he’s trying to say and losing momentum.

With that said, I appreciate the nod to nostalgia without force-feeding the references to the reader (I’m looking at you, Ready Player One).

I’m trying so hard to get through this. I want there to be some sort of payoff after all this jumbled prose that seems to allude at something important, but based on what I’ve read about the book it won’t happen. I’m afraid I will finish and come away with nothing.

I’m recalling why I don’t love Koontz...every explanation sounds like he doesn’t believe his readers understand why his characters are doing what they are doing.

Stop spelling it out for us and give us some damn credit.
