Surprisingly highstakes for a cozy fantasy. On one hand I'm glad because I've noticed in the past how I can have problems with too little plot, on the other hand I'm not sure if this book is up for delivering on that in a satisfying manner. I'll withhold judgement for now. Definitely still enjoying it.

Some clichéd characterisation I'm not a big fan of is my biggest complaint so far (i.e. the dutiful one completely overdoing it to the point of severe medical problems while sick or injured because they thought they could handle it my beloathed), otherwise it's cute and lowstakes. Maybe a bit shallow but it's a silly little gay romance and that's pretty much all that I want from it.

Queensguard and special mage lesbians running away to open a tea slash book shop? Yes please!! I'm not expecting too airtight and/or intricate worldbuilding but I'm ready to be surprised. I'm sure I'll have to keep my inner critic in check to buy the odd convenience/contrivance ("But palace guards didn't *wear* armour, except for ceremonial purposes." ????? I-?? ExCUSE ME???) but it's got potential to be really cute.

I cannot believe that fantasy Wales' national poet is literally Merlin.

The nicest thing I can say is that it's a quick read. Or, well, no - it's that it can be fun at times. BUT you have to ignore a lot of stupidity and bad worldbuilding to enjoy it.

Sorry for being That Bitch but am I supposed to take this seriously or is there some complicated satire going on? Because the book tries hard to sell itself as dark and gritty with the female protag immediately in danger of being raped, murdered and/or enslaved and at the military school students are punished with steel-tipped floggings WHILE THE PEOPLE ARE CALLED SCHOLARS AND MARTIALS?? WDYM THOSE AREN'T TITLES ;__;

'Real Women Have Bodies' was very good. 'Eight Bites' was strong as well and possibly the first to make me a bit uneasy due to personal (lack of) distance to the central topic.

'Especially Heinous' was fantastic. At first, I wasn't convinced by the concept (and I still assume that it would've hit even harder if I had known the series or the characters) but not only does it work, I think it's really brilliant for fragmentary storytelling. I also enjoyed some of the smaller meta aspects. Also probably the most high-quality and poetic thing anything Law & Order has ever been associated with.
