a most EXCELLENT companion to Crosby's Ecological Imperialism, and perhaps a GGS, with this and Crosby being the stronger. The criticisms about him focusing on military history too much are only sort of true for earlier chapters (and again informative and fun) but the Columbian exchange, slave trade, americas chapters have been par excellence. The marriage of empire, ecology and economy, etc here is just wow.

This book single handedly convinced me that Rome/the Vatican are possibly the dumbest settlement spots in human history. Pontine Marshes, possibly the most decisive terrain in European/religious history. Another reason Julius C. getting got was bad. How did nobody till Mussolini do anything about the Marshes?

This has been very engaging, a bit of sidestepping though into standard history where the mosquitos are very much the background. Some errors, but nothing particularly counter intuitive to the authors point (not mentioning Nubia in regards to Egyptian empire tho????)

Pretty much all general knowledge that checks out with a google search, but its crazy to me academics will write things and just be like "nah im not gonna put any references/citations just trust me bro". I get not doing it for every claim/fact but there's some that definitely deserve sources, idc how extensive your bibliography is. Its unprofessional.

Very accessible writing style that is well organized and author did not waste time waxing on and on in intro about inspirations, current state of the topic like most academics do, delved right in and is so far only highlights. No filler. Nice.

Author needs to stop projecting his own white guilt. The section on unconscious bigotry is the dumbest fucking thing ive ever read by a so called "neuroscientist". Apparently later in this book he advocates for eugenics type brain treatment for criminals so im not terribly shocked. STEM majors bro am I right?

First reading of Jung. Honestly this is a spiritual experience. Genius. Beautiful. Sublime.

Im interested in reading more recent analysis on this, especially in regards to neurofeedback therapy, attuning theta/alphawaves and what that would do to a patients comprehension of what's being discussed here by Jung.

This covers quite a lot of ground in a very smooth and accessible manner. Just now though i would say van der kolk is treading on some sketchy ground though. I've read one of the main criticisms of him is his support of repressed memories, which afaik is a debunked idea in psychology. Up until just recently he never seemed to talk about it but now seems to really support on it.

Yeah surely the veteran is only traumatized from his buddies getting killed not at all for the raping and massacring he did that the author literally called "justified". Lots of valuable stuff here but the chauvinism/lack of critical thinking shows on occasion typical westoid brain.

So far pretty much what I expected. Im trying to have an open mind and not be a hater but so far this is just an inferior/lazy sort of pseudoscientific version of Crosby's Ecological Imperialism (not that theres nothing good about GGS!). The introduction yaps on way too much on some beleaguered points that arent necessary and the implication that metallurgy/firearms are important as germs is already turning me off
