a most EXCELLENT companion to Crosby's Ecological Imperialism, and perhaps a GGS, with this and Crosby being the stronger. The criticisms about him focusing on military history too much are only sort of true for earlier chapters (and again informative and fun) but the Columbian exchange, slave trade, americas chapters have been par excellence. The marriage of empire, ecology and economy, etc here is just wow.
