i am so grateful to have unintentionally forgotten all details of the HP movies after watching them for the first time in college. in a way i still get to enjoy the books before the movie. i’m planning to read the entire series in one go and should be able too unless 100 people snatch up the remaining copies on libby at the same time. i always enjoy a european setting!

i talked about this book with a coworker this week and found out that Andy Weir used to work for NASA and that most (or maybe all) of the events and problem-solving in this book are entirely possible. i plan to do more research on this after finishing. i’m scared to see any potential spoilers if i do it now. i will likely finish this book tonight. debating what i should read next

loving this book more and more! i wish john green wrote more nonfiction.

“Dr Pepper marks such an interesting and important moment in human history.” agreed

“I give Diet Dr Pepper four stars.” If he was a real Dr Pepper fan, he would give it five stars (i know i do).

“In 1992, I had a semireligious allegience to wearing a trench coat…” this is not surprising to me at all.

still enjoying this book! been struggling to find time to read these past couple of weeks. i’m keeping my sunday and monday open so i can stay in and read with tea when this cold front blows in! (texas cold front. it’ll be 52°-72°). 🫖❄️🥶
loving the different storylines with each group in this book. it keeps things interesting! i am still enjoying the humor, too. i assume there will be a happy ending..

“Ayup.” - Watney, Martian, pg 185

“Ayup.” - Mike Myers, Cat in the Hat, 2003

this line made me think of that scene in cat in the hat. im liking the different povs that are developing! i’m glad this entire book isn’t just Watney alone on Mars. the range of characters makes things more interesting. definitely going to start reading more Andy Weir! this has been my year of sci fi

things picked up immediately after posting my previous update. we have new characters, new settings, and dialogue now!! i can tell i’m going to enjoy this one a lot. i love Weir’s humor! it’s something i’m really picky about in books, but it feels effortless here

already relating to this book on an extremely deep level and it’s driven by this quote:
“I'd written 1,500 words about Diet Dr Pepper without once mentioning my abiding and deeply personal love of Diet Dr Pepper.”
already an enjoyable, funny, and light read! i see another 5-star nonfiction john green read in my future

I like the format of this being his journal and this quote definitely reminded me of my own. lots of chemistry talk that i’m having trouble following, but i am still enjoying so far!

still enjoying this book but getting through slowly. i am shocked at the cruel and unusual punishment in prisons that still existed in the 1960s. hoping to finish this book in the next two days in time for book club. im excited to see what the next book will be!

so few pages into this book i’m not sure if i can legally say i’m enjoying it yet, but i am enjoying it. absolutely despise the new kindle update and it taints my reading experience so i’m trying to get over that. i have not had much time to read these past few weeks but i need to start working reading into my leisure time again. excited to stay inside reading during the cold weather soon!! (if it ever happens)

I get excited when the book switches back to silo 17 pov, but silo 18 pov is growing on me. Silo 17 just seems to have much higher stakes and their survival is fun to read about. My last update said I was rooting for Jules/Lukas. I fear I must revoke that statement. Lukas and his ignorance feel sketchy, but I am hoping he pulls through. He breaks the rules yet follows them at the same time and i dont know how to feel

Not far in this book by any means, but I feel like I have already learned so much about how important it is to acknowledge mental disturbances and calmly let them go. In my daily practice, I find myself using the sutras that I have read about. A section of yoga sutra 14:

“If you are unsettled and anxious to get the result, you are already disturbed; nothing done with that disturbed mind will have quality.”

still enjoying this book! it has picked up a lot in the past 45 pages and is becoming more of what i expected in the sense of the author sharing his interactions with the inmates. it’s sad to see how many protocols are broken within CCA and i doubt they’ll do anything about it. i can’t blame the guards much as i agree that their <$10/hr pay rate isn’t enough for them to care!

wow.. i am loving this book!! i think about it all evening and yearn for bedtime when i can pick it back up with no distractions. if i had to rate it right now, i’d give it 5 stars. i am 64% done with this book and there have been no assaults against women so far.. i really hope it stays that way (this is almost never the case with fiction in my experience). love the characters. im rooting for lukas and juliette!

this book continues to get even better and i stayed up too late last night reading because the chapters kept starting with new character povs i was excited about!! i like Juliette more as the story progresses and I’m hoping Lukas does not disappoint me although his “love” for Juliette when he doesnt even know her is slightly concerning. i hope it’s not foreshadowing something worse!

this book has been so devastating and frustrating through both the history on penitentiaries and the present day CO training. i’m still pretty early in the book, but i am hoping to get more first-hand accounts with the prisoners as i would like to hear their stories and ideas for a better prison system. there has been one story of a prisoners difficulty in receiving medical attention that stuck with me.

every chapter gets me reeled in more and more as i read on. the cliffhangers are so good i stay up later just to find out what happens. i’m surprised with how much this book has been leaning towards a female lead - i was expecting Holston to be the main character so i’m pleasantly surprised!

pg 140/585. just as the storyline was getting a little slow, i was gifted a really good cliffhanger that sucked me back in. i’m eager to see where things go! i love the writing style and third person pov (as always).

really loving this book already. the author switches between his personal experience as a prison guard and the general overview of the corrections corporation of America. it’s definitely infuriating to read about how CCA became so prevalent in today’s society, but unfortunately it’s not surprising. i want to do some digging into CCA and it’s possible relation to the $45billion ICE detention budget

19% done pg105/585. the storyline happening right now is quite slow and i’m hoping for it to pick up. i’ve been bad about making time for reading these past few weeks but i have a big list of other books i’m also excited about so i’m trying to be more disciplined. i can’t say yet whether i would recommend this book, but it’s seeming like it’ll be a great read.

54% done and book club is this wednesday. there’s some interesting stats about international students not being able to stay in the country after studying undergrad here and the affect that has on innovation, which has slowed tremendously in the recent decades. i’m still skimming in order to hopefully finish by our next meeting.

reposting bc of the pages. pg84/585 14% done. read outside by the water today. love the flashbacks with allison and i have a lot of questions which is good because i'll keep reading to get answers. i'm conflicted on how to feel about jahns and marnes relationship (or lack thereof.?) but very curious as to what's happening there. i am theorizing that holton isn't actually dead. guess i'll have to wait and see..

26% done but i started skimming on pg 71. this type of writing is not my cup of tea so far. so far every chapter has me thinking “this could have been an email”. it’s more researc-y than i expected and has some large chunks of quotes (that fill an entire page sometimes) and very much reads like a boring article. if i pay full attention it will become a DNF but this is for book club so i am skimming to keep up
