Getting into it now. Dostoyevsky's complex interweaving of plot, character and Russian class associations of the day take a little getting used to, especially the names, which are constantly being shortened to sometimes quite obscure diminutives, but already I am intrigued. His ability to allude to what is going on without it being said is amazing.

yes Beard is risible. Difficult to like, but also to hate. Then again I can't help thinking he is probably quite true to life.
