I’m surprised at how reliant and unknowing Belle had been during her marriage, given her education and career before her marriage. She literally could not do anything without her husband, including finances and her kids’ school life. In a way she was more ignorant than my own mother who never went to college. James was a selfish man but I can understand how boring and clinging person Belle was to him

Why is Belle so amenable to her husband, even after he left? Didn't she get the top education in her country? Where are her critical thinking skills? Why is she accepting everything he says about her? Hard to read her remaining submissive even after her marriage is over.

I picked up this book to read about someone like me: determined to start afresh in a new city. Instead I’m seeing a bunch of people I’d rather avoid in real life. Promiscuous, blurred boundaries, uncertain about the future, blah blah blah.
