Almost gave it up because of all the automotive examples, but I'm so glad I didn't. The intervening years since publication have only proven the argument to be more accurate. Look at what is happening with sports betting today!

I agree with all the major claims and I intend to look into the bibliography, yet I am disappointed the author seems to miss the effect that all cars, not just high-tech ones, have.

Working my way through this and trying to do most excersizes. I need training wheels to learn to read poetry. I think I'm getting better.

"But are we ourselves not taken in by the imposing presence of the
amateur detective, prototype of a latter-day swashbuckler, as yet safe
from the insipidity of our contemporary superman?"

From Lacan's Seminar on 'The Purloined Letter'.

Obviously, Lacan would have been a Marvel fan.

I'm reading this on a kindle. This book really makes me wish I could double or triple highlight things, like in a physical book.

Through the preface by Wieseltier and the intro by Arendt. The preface is the second time I've read a liberal preface-writer try to downplay the Marxism of their subject, the other time in some Lukacs translation. Publishers assume that you need a liberal op-ed columnist to write "I promise this is a smart humanist, his Marxism was just a phase! Read on at brunch!"

Oh, Wieseltier got #MeToo-ed? Marx stay winning.

I am loving the old-world panache and elegance of this book. It's like reading an Agatha Christie book, except I actually care about the victim. Not exactly sure who or what that victim might be, though. I suspect the mystery here has a lot to tell me about my own illness and I am eagerly chewing through this book to uncover it.
