The preface is the second time I've read a liberal preface-writer try to downplay the Marxism of their subject, the other time in some Lukacs translation. Publishers assume that you need a liberal op-ed columnist to write "I promise this is a smart humanist, his Marxism was just a phase! Read on at brunch!"
