Like normal - listening to audio - and here I am a short way in, reading reviews for clues. Surely I have missed some key to Rose's motivations. I love Ann Patchett's way with characters, so I know Rose must surely have some trigger, rationale, or ultimately some redeeming quality.

I am pausing this book to mourn Wendell Berry. I think before I come back to Rose I will find what Ann said about her herself.

Wendell Berry died on August 31, 2026 -- a few days after Dolly Parton and Tim Curry; a few days before Gloria Steinem. I had read some of Mr. Berry's essays and poems, and had plans, someday, to get to know his Port William "membership." This collection feels like the right book at the right time. 🥺💔

I first listened to this book of blessings a few years ago at the urging of my friend/life coach. John O'Donohue's voice is a blessing in itself, so listening is essential.
His words teach and sooth at once. Highly recommend, especially if you are in a dark valley.

As usual, I am listening to this book -- a big plus because it is narrated by Tom Hanks and others, so listening sounds like a play.

The reviews are not flattering, but I like it so far. I will have to pick up a copy sometime to see those comic books.

Today, May 30, 2026, I began listening to the audio of this tender book that I have been slow-reading since last fall. Hearing Silas's voice is a delight, an experience that should not be missed.
