Like normal - listening to audio - and here I am a short way in, reading reviews for clues. Surely I have missed some key to Rose's motivations. I love Ann Patchett's way with characters, so I know Rose must surely have some trigger, rationale, or ultimately some redeeming quality.

I am pausing this book to mourn Wendell Berry. I think before I come back to Rose I will find what Ann said about her herself.
