The characters are enjoyable and Tayari Jones is queen of exceptionally great and unique metaphors in her writing.

I’m having mixed feelings about this one. Will see soon how the author wraps up the ending . . .

wow . . . casual moments between the author and his father interspersed with the father’s memories of hiding, losing family members, starving, the fear, etc., is such a serious contrast. The resilience of humankind is extraordinary.

Listening to audio . . . very easy to follow along. Enjoying the main character. Nurse Frankie is quickly coming of age in Vietnam. Glimpses of how the world is changing stateside in letters from her mother.

Better than I imagined so far.

Although I’m slowly making my way through this book it’s not a reflection of a lack of quality of the stories. The authors’ stories are each unique and compelling.

Excellent.

Love reading this community influencer’s origin story in Texas and Oregon. I can call him a philosopher as well as a community leader. Anyone who knew him would agree.

Just finished the excellent short story The Rider by Tananarive Due. Dark Lore feel, historical setting during Jim Crow era in the south. I haven’t read Due’s work before but I was impressed. Her book The Between,1995, is on my TBR list and I just noted Gabino Iglesias, another great horror writer, is currently reading it! She also has a story in the collection The End of the World as We Know It, 2025. Awesome.

Story Lisiren by Erin E. Adams. A tale of three sisters and a mysterious sea monster bargaining for their lives. Author has a debut novel called The Jackal.

A uniquely creative story by author Violet Allen titled The Other One. Excerpt: “She sent me a picture of a heart, a real heart, bloody and fleshy, sitting on our—his—coffee table. It really looks real, so much so that I drop my phone when I see it. “Fuck!” I pick the phone up when I have gathered myself. It still works, but now a long crack winds across the screen, bisecting the image of the heart.”

Invasion of the Baby Snatchers by Lesley Nneka Arimah - Great and disturbing story. Aliens using people as incubators and organized (military and investigative agencies) efforts to manage, analyze, and defeat this occupying alien force learning “us” over time and getting better at hiding and deception.

It was slow to get into it but I’m enjoying the interactions of the Black and Jewish characters who are neighbors struggling to make a good life in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, during the 1920s.

Story titled Wandering Devil - Cadwell Turnbull - story of a man’s leaving. Despite a mysterious warning from a blind street musician to put an end to his wanderlust . . . Freddy can’t put aside his inherited generational habit of leaving a place and all others behind.

I first read Turnbull in The Dystopia Triptych series. He’s got a great way of emotionally connecting you to his characters.

Another great short story titled Eye & Tooth by Rebecca Roanhorse. Author introduces sister and brother, Zelda and Atticus, who are a monster-hunting team for hire.

Roanhorse is a NYTimes bestselling author and a Nebula, Hugo & Locus award winner for speculative fiction. Unique style in this horror short.

I’m sensing this ride with Jordan Peele’s curated story collection is going to be wildly exhilarating.
