Yikes, a seriously raw and heartbreaking story. In these first two chapters we enter into siblings Oscar’s and Lola’s stormy early lives. It’s tough being an onlooker. Need a break from it. Next chapter is about their mother, Belie (short for Belicia). I’m sure it’s going to be an ugly tumultuous 90 or so pages. I’ll let you know.

I’m learning a lot. I had no idea what “sneaking dead soldiers” meant. Lots of 70s cultural references. Oscar is a SciFi / Fantasy guy, a Dominican, & is described like this, “Could write in Elvish, could speak Chakobsa, could differentiate between a Slan, a Dorsai, and a Lensman in acute detail, knew more about the Marvel Universe than Stan Lee, and was a role-playing fanatic.”

So far it’s slow going because I have to stop to look up words: “Perhaps if like me he’d been able to hide his otakuness . . .”
I recommend reading digitally with online dictionary due to Dominican slang & spanish. Some words new to me are decipherable based on context, but not all. I did watch a YouTube video to learn about the lively “perrito dance” young Oscar mastered.
