Sandi G. is starting The Wartime Matchmakers
Very readable story based on the lives of two British women who created a matchmaking business during World War II. The author did a good job of describing the experience of being in London during the Blitzkrieg. The history seemed accurate. Their love lives, however, were a creation of the author, and there was a good bit of romanticism concerning the heroism of the pilots, commandos, etc.

In 1973 when history classes presented Founding Fathers as cardboard cutouts, this book satisfied a need for the reader to find the “naughty bits” of history. Since then we have evolved past snickering that historical figures were human and possibly even complicated. Vidal spent so much energy and snarky satire snickering at his characters that he failed to tell a compelling story about them.

Not enjoying this,I read reviews to see how others felt. Am stunned by glowing reviews! Mother so unbelievable it’s hard to get past.Explain to me how a normal, healthy mother becomes a hopeless, useless abused addict in a year’s time. Of course she’s grieving but she hasn’t been replaced by an alien. Her transformation is too fast and too unbelievable. Audio narration is distracting and awkward.

Most depressing book ever. Okay, admitedly I haven't finished it. Things could turn around for our protagonist and she could have a happy ending! Remains to be seen.

Really interesting account of the author's experience in women's prison and how it changed her. Funny, sad and human descriptions of the other inmates and her relationships with them and with the correctional system.

Beautifully told story set in 1920's Alaska. Interesting how the descriptions of tough and hardy pioneer life are woven together with a delicate hint of fantasy.
