Flashbacks, "en media res" openings, frame narrative, dramatic irony, flawed protagonists, a hero's journey-this ONE BOOK is the beginning of almost all of modern literature. And it's still just as involving and emotionally impactful as it was millennia ago.

When I first read this, I was left bewildered. I had an absolute blast, but was left reeling, unsure of what to make of the novel, particularly the final section.

I'm doing a slow reread to finish out 2021, and holy hell, does everything become clearer. The novel is far more controlled and purposeful than I first thought. Truly a book you HAVE to read twice.

Very dense going with the discussion of commodity, but it's quite clearly the foundation of all of Marx's materialist analysis. It's really impressive how he has been expanding beyond part 1, and I'm curious to see what the rest beholds.

Some of these tangents are testing my patience (the zoot suit guy talking with the crazy film director, Tcitcherine's exploits in translation) but they seem to be reincorporated later. So I will weather this storm and withhold judgement.

Terrifying. Erotic. Hilarious. Erudite. Crass. Disturbing. And riveting.

Above all else this is an extremely horny book
