It’s a pretty good book but I thought it was going to be more of what was presented in Frontline. He is an essayist, think Garrison Keillor but a trifle sententious. The article was about how his townspeople handled death and grief. He has a unique vantage point as the small rural town’s mortician. If I wanted to read essays or poems, there are others I would seek out first.

I abandoned this book when I realized that the book’s orthodoxy is regarded by many mainstream scholars as questionable, the nihil obstat notwithstanding.

I’ve abandoned this, at least for the time being. It is obviously written by and for those Catholics who describe themselves as “Traditionalist” Catholics, whose theology and doctrine seems at odds with (post-Vatican (II)) Catholicism. I am not a theologian by training and don’t trust my insight to discriminate heresy from orthodoxy in the metaphysics of the diabolical,
