In news that will shock noone, this history of child abuse is a huge bummer.

Not me googling "how to hide my reviews from the author on goodreads" already. Can we stop letting straight men write relationship books? I audibly gagged while reading something "cute" the author decided to include. I bet this man is a "life coach" therapist. (I apologize dude if you read this; Google said you couldn't).

Oh my stars, the idea of literally entering hell to maybe get a letter of rec from a piece of poop PhD advisor is comically realistic.

I'm learning a lot in this book. It's less accessible than braiding sweetgrass, but I think the book is better for it. The care taken in highlighting the relationality of all the experts referenced is something I hope to keep in mind moving forward.

Loving the protagonist. So far, it's giving Carrie Underwood energy but as a protector of the sister, and that's awesome.

Definitely strong variation in the quality of the various essays therein. Some, like the chapter on Hungary, feel a bit shallow to me. I'm still enjoying this book, but it's very hit or miss each time, and some authors tend to choose an incredibly academic/dense writing style, which isn't my preference. I think there are some interesting throughlines, like the threat of student fascist groups, that are worth thought.

It's so weird reading historians and social scientists from a couple decades ago talk about fascism. The elements emphasized, the parallels drawn, and the warnings leveled have all changed considerably compared to writings since 2016.

Interesting read so far. The book is pretty dated, and it's giving a bit of "The End of History". However, I'm learning a good bit so I'm excited for the rest of it.

Thank God this book isn't a rise and grindset book. More the opposite. I picked it up thinking "ugh, I need to get my dissertation done. How do the obnoxious losers do it?" Luckily, I accidentally picked up a book by an author who jives with most of my philosophical worldview, but does it better than me. Now it's more like eating a meh main course instead of a plate of gross health food.

So I'm enjoying the book, but I wish authors had more than a cursory understanding of mental health. The depiction of trauma and its outcomes are rudimentary at best. I can't fault an author for focusing on different things than I do, but man, I want to.

This book isn't what I was expecting, but that's not necessarily a bad thing so I'm holding out judgement.

I'd been avoiding the LitRPG genre like the plague for years, but call me 1350 since I've caught the bug.
