I was really loving this book at first, but there have been a few points now where I cringe at the white savior, old cishet man, and "oof maybe don't try aave if you've never spoken to a black person before" of it all. I haven't checked about the author yet, but the vibe I get is MFA creative writing thesis of a retiree. Still like it enough to finish though...
