Well, that was profoundly brilliant.

He is a genius, and some moments were truly transcendent. I wish it hadn't aged so poorly. A lot of the plot and character motivations which were probably fresh in 1961, seem inexplicable at best and ridiculous at worst by today's standards. I wish someone brilliant could make nips and tucks to make it believable in a modern context. He has original things to say about America, sex, sexuality, power and race.

I can appreciate its literary value, but it wasn't an enjoyable read for me.

I can see it's a beautifully written book, but the immense cultural differences kept me from fully understanding the tone of the book and the context of its characters. I did not get fully immersed in the story.

Not for nothing, but... They couldn't find any WOMEN to translate this exceptionally female-focused narrative? I have to believe some part of the literary experience was lacking for this reason.
