The fanfic had higher stakes, because there was already an established world. I cannot separate the Alchemised from Manacled here. When I try to, the new story is just a shell of itself and looses all meaning. The faith aspect is so unbelievable, there is no WHY behind The Bad Guy, backstory of the world is almost non existent.
