The title is of course eye-catching and almost gimmicky, definitely what drew me to this book.
But, halfway through, the contents have been kind of disappointing.
Most of what has been said thus far feels very common-sense, like a combination of basic economic theory and feminism 101.

The amount of “women only care about love, for men love is insignificant and they actually also care about other more important things” comments in this short book are truly impressive.

Every other paragraph, I think, has some sort of thought that goes Woman- dumb and emotional, Man- aloof, smart, tolerates woman.

I know that casual misogyny comes with the territory when reading books written by men, and often women, from certain periods.
Within the first 60 pages there are constant comments regarding the “emotional nature” of woman which are not even remotely clever or witty.
If you write misogynistic characterizations at least do it through smarter observations.

I was wondering if this is inspired by Gauguin, and it is.

I don’t know if Cecilia is sick, but I’m sure sick of being in her head.
It’s like reading from the pov a horny poly nun.
She goes on a 10 page guilt filled overthinking spree after every minor incident in her relationships.

About midway through, I’m noticing how the writing could use a bit more editing. The phrase the feeling of “blank” washes over me is way overused and I can’t unsee it.

Is there any Japanese fiction written by a man that isn’t progressively horny?

I’ve been looking for this book EVERYWHERE today because the only thing I remembered of it was the cover. I hope the book will be worth it

A grown woman describing how a 13-year-old girl “manipulated and seduced” her. Murakami is unhinged, he has a terrible pattern of sexualizing teenage girls.

If I took a shot every time Murakami unnecessarily describes a random female character’s breasts, I’d be wasted enough to not mind it anymore.

I rarely feel the urgent need to reread a book, but I knew I could get so much more out of this novel than I did during my first read

I forgot how damn horny everyone in Stephen King’s books is

The language is a little awkward. You know when someone clearly has advanced knowledge of a language and uses big and smart words, but at the same time structures sentences in a way that’s not very organic.
There’s a certain charm to it though, instead of being westernized the book doesn’t let you forget that it’s set in a completely different culture.

I tear up at everything these days I can barely get through one chapter without getting emotionally overwhelmed what is going on

I love how Hardy writes female characters

You can easily cut off 40% of every non-fiction book of this kind and not miss out on anything

“I quickly decided that he was bipolar” was a line I never thought I’d read in a romance

Um wow, this is making me feel things

It’s been way too long since I’ve fallen in love with a fictional character and it shows

I’m going to have a stroke trying to read this

I wonder what happens to women of color. Can they be Handmaids? Are they Handmaids to POC families?
