This is the second book this summer about an old horror film director, and this is proving just a compulsively readable. A fun read by the pool for sure. Fingers crossed it continues in this vein!

Up to Ch. 38 (start of Part 5).

I really like the setting and the creepiness of the house, but OH MY GOD, the lead character is infuriating.

“Please help me, I need X!”
“OK, here’s what you need to do, do you understand/agree?”
“Yes!” *proceeds to ignore everything she promised to do & makes everything worse*

I love the story but my god, it’s SO hard to listen to her, because she makes me SO angry!

I’m 10% in when I realise this is book 2 of a trilogy? But honestly, I felt introduced to the world and intrigued by the characters, and am already invested.

I’m having to pause because the sheer volume of things in this book that make me angry. It’s well-written, and packed full of inconvenient truths - but also, I’m having to ration the chapters so each point of rage gets sufficient attention. I knew about the impact of sanitation facilities (or lack thereof), but transit planning & urban design impacts are new (to me) info.

I was clearly over-committing at the “225 books” stage, WTF. This year I’m going to be kind to myself and not set impossible, ridiculous goals. 214 books? Still the most I’ve ever read in a year. I’m taking that win (and setting a much lower target in 2022).

Realising that my previous gung-ho increase in my reading challenge was not even a little realistic. Sigh. Hopefully this is a LITTLE more manageable…

Fucking Faust should fucking burn. Seething? No, I’m just angry enough to power several power stations through my rage.

“Did we poison our ethics with the trolley problem?”

… don’t mind me, I’m just going to be sat in a corner, staring blankly.

I continue to want to strangle Faust, fucking hell, him and Madame are pure fucking evil. Excuse me while I seethe in a corner.

“Where are you trying to put it?” I was trying to put a tampon in my urethra.

I just burst out laughing SO HARD. The audiobook is GOLD.
