Margaret is starting The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell
The entire premise of this book is weak. First, the persistent blatant bias in Catholic school system authorities against a kid for eye color alone is not believable. Second, there was nothing extraordinary about Sam Hill’s life so the title is misleading. In fact, Sam Hill is a boring character leading an ordinary life of a not popular kid with ordinary challenges. Nothing really interesting happens.

Listening to audiobook. Finding it a bit slow. On chapter 18 snd thinking oh no!! over 40 more chapters and this 11 year old is alone, unwanted, unloved.

I want a hard copy so I can move faster. This story is becoming tedious. And to be honest I don’t enjoy stories about abuse so I’d like to start speed reading and skimming over the less important characters.

There is a redundancy in the writing. How many times must Hedi remind herself about “the high stakes?” The reader hasn’t forgotten, why the repeated reminders? wedding hasn’t yet happened and the groom has become demanding and disrespectful and the bride feels like a bought woman. Blech.

Much better than the movie. It’s a story of the mind. This passage in Chapter 4 says it all regarding Phil and George “There never had been any spoken sentiment between them, and never would be. Their relationship was not one based on words.”

Reminders if the hippie culture of the 60’s and heavy drug use by young people who ran away to SF. Liked Ch 15 about Going Home and our now rootless way of life. Starting Part 3.

At 24% this is a jailhouse experience book. Where is the high achiever part? The addiction story?

Excellent. well written. fascinating. Educational. It is beyond sad that Pharma companies cannot justify costly research into better treatments than existing placating medications that are likely outdated therapies but generate stable cash flow and profits. Chapter 33 was depressing in the reality that Pharma is a business first and foremost. We know this but it is still disheartening.
