4.5 stars. Slow start but really hooked me! Still working out thoughts on the ending.

I got off to a slow start with this book and it’s brutality. But wow I am so immersed now. These stories are ones I never learned in history class, and the writing is gorgeous. It’s a tough book, and it’s just beautiful.

Wow. Gorgeous. I’m totally infatuated with this book.

I am enjoying this book so much. I’m not sure why it’s taken me so long to get through it.

Finally diving into this book. It’s been on my shelf for years. Enjoying the premise — we shouldn’t abandon feminism entirely because we don’t fully align with its historical ways of being — and I like her writing. First essay is bouncing around a bit.

“We have been estranged from the potential of our own bodies, from the revelation of everything our bodies and minds could accomplish.”

“I knew he had preserved my person despite the death of his own flesh and blood, and I knew, too, how strange it felt to be alive, and whole, and astonishingly worth saving.” I have read this line repeatedly and it keeps hitting me in the gut.

The line about Wash feeing the pain of rejection now that he has been “swallowed whole by the white man’s world” is heartbreaking.

Not a single misplaced, extraneous word to be found. Such be studio observations of and reflections about nature.

I think the puzzle pieces are starting to come together, and I'm starting to appreciate more the structure of the book. The Josey Wales chapter in Shadow Dancin' was very enlightening about the plot line and various characters' motivations.

I see why this is an award-winning book. But it is so graphic I am struggling to read more than a few pages at a time. The dialect makes it tough to read too, but also so raw and real.
